Why Piraeus?

Welcome to Piraeus! A port city with a fascinating and ancient history, full of life, with sights worth seeing.

Piraeus constitutes an urban landscape of exceptional interest, which by definition reduces it to a potential - and with many challenges - field of cultural and tourism policy.

Piraeus is one of the main national hubs of development and functions as a leading gateway for entry and tourist traffic for the country, having developed a consolidated international identity as an important commercial and passenger port in Europe with a national and interregional role. At the same time, the city is home to a spatial concentration of a multitude of important cultural sites, antiquities, industrial and cultural stock. In this context under conditions of interconnection and prominence, Piraeus constitutes an excellent primary material of cultural heritage.

The promotion and protection of this cultural heritage can primarily contribute to historical memory and at the same time create conditions for the implementation of a sustainable development and tourism policy.

On the basis of this dual role of the city of Piraeus, as a tourist and cultural pole of international interest, the Municipality of Piraeus prioritizes the reorganization of the city's economy and entrepreneurship in the direction of strengthening sectors and actions that utilize local, regional and national competitive advantages and with absolute priority the Tourism sector and more specifically Conference, Urban, Maritime, Cultural and Sports Tourism.
